About Special Education Needs
WIS has a well set up Special Education Needs Unit that onboard pupils from the mainstream classed to the SEN Unit for their intervention. Some of the specialized services we render under this program include:.
Over the years we have added on the Early Years Curriculum and we are proud to say we have a perfect blend of both curricula.
One-on-One Academic Programming
We focus on helping our pupils with special education needs acquire academic skills, social interaction abilities, functional communication, language skills, and appropriate behaviour functioning based on each child’s motivation and readiness. For this reason, each and every program is different in order to ensure that each student’s individualized needs are met. Our inclusive teaching strategies are effective for all students in both the regular classrooms and intensive natural/home environments.
Upon gaining entry in SEN Unit, each student is assigned a teacher and program coordinator. The program coordinator reviews the information and guides the child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Our teachers are highly skilled in various evidence-based interventions and therapeutic methodologies such as the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEARCH). Data collection is done on a continuous basis, and meetings are held with families on a regular basis to review the child’s progress and any concerns.
Consultation
We provide consultation regarding specific issues bordering on inclusive teaching strategies, teaching teachnologies, student behaviour and classroom management. We also help general schools to setup inclusive special education features, and train their staff to be effective special educators.
Observation &Assessment
We conduct observation in order to obtain accurate, detailed, verifiable information about the child being assessed and his/her surrounding contexts. Our assessments are based on:
- ABLLS – The assessment of basic language and learning skills (ABLLS) is an educational tool used frequently with applied behavior analysis (ABA) to measure the basic linguistic and functional skills of an individual with development delays or disabilities.
- VB-MAPP – The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is an assessment skills-tracking system and curriculum guide to assess the language, learning and social skills of children with autism or other developmental disabilities. A strong focus of the VB-MAPP is language and social interaction, which are the predominant areas of weakness in children with autism.
- CTOPP-2 – This is an assessment of phonological awareness, phonological memory, and naming. This assessment features all new normative data and a new phonological awareness subtest known as Phoneme Isolation. Our professional recommendations will be used on these observations and assessments.
Curriculum & Training /Therapy Schedule
We design a curriculum for each student based on the child’s unique individual needs (using Individualized Education Plans-IEPs).
Reports
We prepare daily and/or weekly reports for each child for the purpose of effective progress monitoring and re-evaluation.
